Why would you want to own a cordless strimmer?

Well, while gardening can be fun, it can also be a pain, and anything that makes the tedious maintainence jobs like trimming the lawn a little easier has to be a good thing.

I used to use a corded electric mower - but that was a total pain. Not only was it small and slow, iI was also constantly struggling to keep the cord away from those spinning blades. Nowadays, when it comes to cutting my lawn I prefer a decent sized petrol lawn mower because it makes covering the ground so much easier.

But even a petrol mower is no good for those awkward, hard to reach spots like down the side of the greenhouse or shed. Many of my friends were amazed when I went for an electric bosch cordless strimmer because I'm normally such a petrol head. But my reasoning is quite simple.

A petrol strimmer while efficient for clearing brush is a beast of a machine and requires a lot of PPE etc. Whereas my neat little cordless strimmer is lightweight, easy to carry, handle and control and holds its charge well.

So what features should you look for in a cordless strimmer or grass trimmer

Weight

If you're a big burly young guy then the weight of your strimmer may not be an issue. But, for the rest of us mere mortals weight is a big issue. Most electric cordless strimmers are lightweight and are designed for light trimmer around the garden. Petrol grass trimmers and strimmers are MUCH heavier so only get one of these is you have large amounts of rough scrub to clear regularly.

Battery charge time/Run Life

Only a few years agothe battery life on cordless tool of all types was pretty abismal. But modern battery technology has raised run time massivly. Msot cordless strimmers will charge in an hour or two and give you enough time to do a good job around your garden (if you've got lot and lots of rough ground to clear - look again at petrol).

Having said that, always read the technical spec and make sure that you buy a strimmer with a battery life that is long enough to cover the times it;s going to take you to do your garden - if in doubt make sure you get a spare battery.

Price.

Good quality cordless grass trimmers and strimmers are't cheap, but as ever you will get what you pay for so avoid the cheapest foriegn imports and stick with the big names.

Size and design

Cordless trimmers and grass strimmers come in a variety of sizes but most are relativly small, reflecting their design for use in smaller gardens and as back up to a good lawn mower.

The good news here is that most modern strimmers havea lot of ergonomic design input to make sure the are easy and comfortable to use. Once again sticking with the major players is a wise move.

Colour

Well, if the colour of your gardeb tools is important to you - you have plenty of choice - though to be honest they're most likely going to be red, orange or green ;o)

The Black and Decker 18v cordless strimmer puts a happy smile on my face everytime I use it :o)
